CEO's for Cities: SJ2020 - Talent Dividend
12:00 PM-2:00 PM
 Type of Event:
Topic: SJ2020 - Talent Dividend
Staff: Ben Yurman-Glaser, Policy Analyst
Requirements of Mayor: Co-hosting with Superintendent Chuck Weis and Carol Coletta, Exe. Dir., CEOs for Cities
Program of Events: Remarks
This relates to CEOs for Cities, K-12/higher education in San Jose, and the ED Strategy update. CEOs for Cities is a national cross-sector network of urban leaders from the civic, business, academic and philanthropic sectors dedicated to building and sustaining the next generation of great American cities. CEOs for Cities works with its network partners to develop great cities that excel in the areas most critical to urban success: talent, innovation, connections, and distinctiveness.
The City of San Jose has been a participant in CEOs for Cities since 2005, along with other local partners such as San Jose State University, 1stACT, Adobe, and Knight Foundation.

Talent Dividend: Economic Gains from Educational Attainment
The research is unassailable: educational attainment is the biggest predictor of economic success for cities and metro areas today. The more educated a city’s population, the more robust its economy will be. However, few urban leaders nationally are focused on the relationship between education and the economy. In fact, producing more college-educated residents is rarely found in any city’s economic development plan.

In a move to increase the political and civic will to produce more college educated graduates and thereby help cities capture real economic gains, CEOs for Cities has calculated the national Talent Dividend. Increasing educational attainment, measured by raising the four-year college attainment rate by one percentage point in each of America’s 51 largest metropolitan regions, would be associated with an increase in income of $124 billion per year for the nation.

In San Jose, increasing college attainment by one percentage point will produce a local Talent Dividend of $1.4 billion annually. Monetizing these achievements can serve as a powerful motivator for urban leaders to act urgently to achieve results.

Talent Dividend Tour Coming to San Jose in October
CEOs for Cities, in partnership with the Lumina Foundation for Education, recently launched a “national tour” around the Talent Dividend. Through 2009, the leadership of CEOs for Cities will visit 25 cities to galvanize cross-sector groups of urban leaders to engage around strategies to increase the number of people in the education pipeline who come out of it with a college degree.

The Silicon Valley Education Foundation will host the Talent Dividend Tour in San Jose the week of October 13 (date TBD) as part of its 2009 Forum series exploring the future of education in Silicon Valley.
The 25 cities involved in the tour are Atlanta, Baltimore, Billings, Chattanooga, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Jackson, Los Angeles, Memphis, Miami, Milwaukee, New York, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Tampa.
