The Blue and Gold Awards began in 1967 as a project of the Mobile, Alabama Club to increase awareness of and respect for the risks taken by law encorcement and firefighters in the line of duty. It soon came to the attention of the Exchange National Board, which adopted the program and encouraged other clubs to implement it. The San Jose Exchange carries on this tradition. The MACSA Youth center prepares youth for academic and social success by providing recreation, education, career, and social services to children of all ages. The SJRA invested $500,000 to renovate the facilities childcare section, operated under Smart Standard standards. The upgrades increase the center's service capacity from 28 to 108 students. Renovations include a new playground and gym floor, resurfaced classroom and hallway floors, and an interior reconfiguration to expand service capacity from 28 - 108 preschool and elementary school children. One of 53 childcare facilities in Sj to operating under Smart Start program quality standards administered by the SJ Public Library

San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed, Councilmembers Nora Campos and Sam Liccardo, City Manager Debra Figone, and Police Chief Rob Davis will announce a major research initiative on police practices in San Jose.

Recently a number of questions have been raised regarding San Jose arrest statistics and whether or not they reflect biased-based actions by members of the Police Department.  The research consortium’s effort will provide insights and will identify opportunities to make improvement in policies, procedures and/or training.  The goal of this effort is to ensure that the San Jose Police Department retains the best practices in policing, as well as community credibility and trust.

NOTES: SCC Council of the Aging & Adult Servcies in partnership with the Council on Aging Silicon Valley has promoted the role of nutrition in preventive health and long-term care for 35 years. As the primary program serving impoverished elders in SV, Meals on Wheels served over 600,000 meals to over 1400 homebound seniors in FY 2007-08. These meals help the most frail and elderly seniors of our community remain healthy, maintain their independence and retain their dignits. Approximately 2/3 of all Meals on Wheels participats reside in the City of San José and almost 400,000 meals are delivered to residents of the City of San José.
